| The owners of KATITCHE POINT GREATHOUSE take great care to offer you
an unusual selection of French Champagne and white and red wines from Germany,
France and Italy. They cannot be found in Caribbean or U.S. supermarkets.
We courteously invite you to experience some new tastes.
Germany is one of the oldest wine producing areas in the world. Although it never enjoyed the international reputation of France, Germany's white wine used to be found on every connoisseur's wine list before the last world war. Modern German wine makers, who love to drink their wines themselves, have always thought that it is the dry crispiness of a white wine and the fruity flavor of the grapes, which makes a good wine rather than a high alcohol content. It is now for the past five years or so that one of the most prestigious wine regions in south-western Germany, Baden, is experiencing a comeback of small, privately owned wineries that produce most exquisite wines for adequate prices. Again one has to stress that flavor and a dry taste always comes first and that alcohol content depends every year on the sun and general weather conditions. The natural sweetness of the grape juice turns - via a carefully monitored fermentation process - into alcohol. Added sugar, which turns into alcohol too, is not used as a taste enhancer in modern German wine production, to add sugar is the case in most modern, industrial wine productions around the world. The smooth small mountains along the Rhine have always been Germany's most prominent wine areas. Rheingau, Mosel, Nahe, and Ruwer – these names ring familiar bells to many wine lovers around the globe. It is the very Riesling that has so many friends. We offer you quite a selection of Rieslings, some very dry, some slightly sweet, some deliberately sweet. There has not been any sugar added to these wines, the sweetness is retained from the grape juice. The wine makers just stop the process of fermentation and it is the totally natural product, which leaves the very elegant sweetness to your taste.
We invite you to go on a wine tasting experience, which will take some
glasses to get used to. German White's, Rose's and Red's do not overpower
your gums and taste buds - what you might perceive as a first taste as
light and without depth, is in fact a delicate, dry and crisp experience
for the mouth and the stomach. Please bear with us, when we explain the
German wines more elaborately. However, unknown things need to be explained!
We do not need to introduce our favorite wines from France, Italy and Spain at length. Their exquisite taste experiences speak for themselves. You must always drink all the white, rosé and you may drink some of the red wines on this menu chilled, i.e. the wine should never have a temperature above 4°-6° Celsius / 39°-42° Fahrenheit. The great reds on this list should never be consumed warm, i.e. should never have a temperature above 18° Celsius. The owners of KATITCHE POINT GREATHOUSE guarantee the superb quality
of our selection, if you are willing to follow new avenues of taste. We
think our selection goes extremely well with the sunny and tropical climate
of the Caribbean. The presented wines, if consumed with moderation, are
an ideal companion of a happy vacation!
![]() We would like to make two suggestions (don't tell anybody, as all the experts might frown!): If it is hot and you want to consume a refreshing, tasteful and invigorating drink, we suggest two traditional recipes our grandparents loved: You can't do any better in summer! Obviously both of the above have to be served ice-cold. We could write a book on the origin of this most famous Baden-grape, called the Gutedel. Many wine historians debate its origin. It is now found only in the Markgraefler-region of south-west Germany. This signature wine makes a light, pleasant and dry addition to all white meats and fish and is most perfect as a sipping wine or “Spritzer” with sparkling water. We like our good friends Doerflinger in Muellheim, who are champions of dry in Baden. Try it! Highly recommended! The White Burgundy in Baden is on the rise to stardom. Being closely related to the Pinot Noir, we consider the White Burgundy the most demanding grape for a wine maker. He has a delicate bouquet and a tender fruitiness, which is to be discovered by the discerned white wine connoisseur. Winery Dr. Heger has some of the most sought selections of white wines and is the leading winery in Baden. A Spaetlese is harvested later in the season and its grapes are selected by hand. The Spätlese in the German ranking has to be of superior quality. The superb Winery Dr. Heger is privately owned and is considered one of the best wineries in Baden. For many years the privately owned winery Salway has been a quiet star of Baden’s small vinyards. Their wines are exquisite by any standards and are starting to enjoy a national reputation. The Pinot Grey or Grey Burgundy has its loyal and enthusiastic friends, who swear this is the most complex of all white burgundies. Its fruity taste and hints of spices and vanilla, further, its rich and hearty appearance makes it a fantastic companion for white meats, grilled vegetables and all sorts of salads. This dry Spätlese is from their best piece of soil and hence called 1. Gewaechs. The Riesling-grape enjoys a worldwide reputation as the king of white
wines. One immediately associates the regions of Mosel, Rheingau, Nahe
and Ruwer as the most prominent German Riesling-regions. The excellent
and well known private winery Kuenstler makes this easy drinking, highly
enjoyable dry Riesling, which goes down so well in this hot climate. Its
little alcohol content makes you drink without regrets. Our day to day
wine. We love it!
In Germany one distinguishes between three classifications of high quality wine. They are in rising order: Kabinett, Spaetlese and Auslese. This dry Kabinett Riesling is the best dry Riesling, we are offering. The fantastic small winery Karthaeuserhof was once an insider choice. Today these Rieslings are much sought after in the whole country. This 2004 is a real treat, if you like your Riesling dry and crisp. Germany has just now adopted a system of classifying their best wine regions by parcels. Only the best lots, with the best soil and lots of sunshine can obtain the classification “1.Gewaechs” – like the “Grand Cru Classe” in France. This amazingly rich and beautifully balanced Riesling is harvested from such a parcel. To us, Riesling cannot get any better than this offering by the ever reliable winery Künstler. Fantastic with white meats and fish. Fritz Haag is not only a legend in Germany, he is known around the globe as a maker of one of the finest Rieslings in Germany. His Juffer Sonnenuhr is his best area and this Spaetlese is probably the best sweet Riesling you can buy in Europe. Again, this is not desert wine sweetness, this is to be enjoyed ice-cold as an aperitif before dinner, or just try a bottle in the late afternoon. We guarantee you will enjoy this fine wine, with its comparatively low alcohol content immensely. We are thrilled and proud to be able to present you this highly acclaimed desert wine from Fritz Haag. This is sheer perfection. If you decide an after dinner drink – treat yourself to this experience! Undoubtedly the flagship white Burgundy of our selection. We know Mr. Boillot long before his steep rise to stardom. He is one of France’s finest young wine makers. This Puligny Montrachet is one of the finest white wines from the most famous white wine area in the world. A real bargain too on Virgin Gorda! We cannot possibly close this white wine list without French Chablis. This gem is one of our favourites. Lots of body and yet dry and crisp, exactly what you expect from Chablis of this calibre vineyard. The Loire Valley is the home of the famous Sancerre, which has become a household name for an excellent French white wine, which can be consumed at all seasons. Papiot is a master of the art and we are very fortunate to present you this excellent Sancerre, which closes our white wine selection. Rose wines have regained reputation in recent years, rightly so! Gone are the days of sweet sugar water with all the negative side effects on the next morning. The Provence has been the home of some very excellent Rose wines for almost centuries. We offer you one of our favorite Rose wines for drinking during the day or light meals. A treat! The red pinot noir grape, which is harvested at the Kaiserstuhl in Baden,
the hottest area of Germany is of muscular, yet velvet taste. It matures
twelve month in a traditional large oak barrel, there it acquires some
nice tannins and the nose depicts flavour of excellent wild berries. The
privately owned winery Huber has done amazing work these last years and
has steadily pushed their Pinot Noir to the forefront of German red burgundys.
We only feature one red Burgundy from France, but we have selected one
of the very best. Grivot is a long established star winery, which offers
a very fine Vosne Romanee. For all Burgundy lovers, who know, or who want
to find out! Just don't drink it too warm, please!
This is a uniquely balanced, harmonious and yet complex structured Bordeaux from Haut-Medoc. It is full with body and strength and will go very well with red meats and grilled foods of any sort. Make this you special dinner treat! We are very happy to offer this wine in a Magnum bottle as well for an extremely reasonable price. A very good year in Margaux, an excellent vinyard of highest reputation, and a great Grand Cru Classe Bordeaux. This is the very best Claret on our wine list. Vanilla, red berries, some nice tannins, you name it – this ultra smooth and yet voluptuous Bordeaux is the high point of your meal or you celebrate it just by itself with some bread. Parker rates this exceptional wine with 93 points. This is our favourite Bordeaux celebrity! For the evening together! The Chianti region in Tuscany, Italy, has enjoyed a well published rise in wine quality in the last decade. One of the finest private wineries is the winery Podere Il Palazzino. This wine is only available in special restaurants and selected wine merchants around Southern Europe. We are proud to offer this extremely reasonably priced Chianti Classico, an excellent red wine for the hotter climates. The Rosso di Montalcino is often described as the little brother of
the great Brunello. This is an understatement! We are fortunate to have
the fresh and modern wines of Pieri Agostina on our wine list. His Rosso
di Montalcino is a very nice, full bodied and yet easy and smoothly drinking
- typical Italian - red wine. For the BBQ dinner! All this for a very interesting
price too!
This Brunello by Agostina is from the superlative year of 2001 can be rightly described as the premier wine from this win yard. If you like the deep red colour, the well balanced taste and the raunchy body of a masterpiece of Italian wine making than this extremely well priced Brunello is for you! I would drink it after dinner when looking into the skies and pondering: why do we ever have to go home? We would rather keep this wine to ourselves. If you like a Barolo,
if you find that it is the special mood that makes you decide to open a
grand Barolo rather than a Brunello of similar quality, if you frown
at people, who don't get the difference, than we cannot do better that
this masterpiece by Cascina Ballarin. Drink and believe!
In these days no wine list is complete without some fine Spanish reds. This very nice full bodied and yet well balanced wine from the famous bodegas A. Fernandez. It goes well with all meats and vegetables and has a welcome light touch to it. Try it chilled! The premier red wine region in Spain, the famous Rioja are, home of
one of Europe’s finest red wines. We - once again – are thrilled to offer
you this great Rioja from the very well known vinyard Marques de
Murietta! Excellent dark red appearance, fully bodied, highly enjoyable
wine tasting.
